Coping Mechanism

A blog about everything by Jack Baty

Creating a static archive of my Medium.com blog using Mel

I used to post occasionally on Medium, but stopped. Most of the posts were copied or imported from my other blogs, but some were Medium-only. I thought it would be a good idea to archive them somewhere safe from Medium's uncertain future.

I used a web app from Brennan Kenneth Brown called Meddler. Here's his announcement post. The app runs in the browser locally and worked a treat. There's also a CLI version.

I used Hugo to create a site from the Medium content here:

👉 medium.baty.net.

It was straightforward:

  1. Download my Medium archive. See this for instructions.
  2. Use Meddler! to convert the archive to a Hugo-compatible format. (And also to download all of the images).
  3. Create a new Hugo blog and install a theme. I chose Hugo Blog Awesome but tweaked the theme so all posts are displayed on the home page.
  4. Add the converted Medium archive's Markdown files to /content/posts.
  5. Bob's your uncle!

Hmm, that didn't work. Please try again, and if it still doesn't work, get in touch.
